Transform your understanding of trauma and help youth recover the promise of childhood
Through the unending cycle of trauma recovery, the human species has learned how to adapt to stress and life threatening situations. These evolutionary instincts recognize not just the story of what happened, but include natural physiological and emotional mechanisms for the release of stress and trauma. Yet, modern trauma treatment tends to neglect the body-based dimension of trauma.
In this two-day course, you will learn a strength‐based approach for working with childhood trauma that engages the whole child, including their physical, mental and emotional resources to promote healing, develop resilience and support growth.
You'll learn to integrate evidence-based tools, such as yoga, mindfulness, social-emotional learning activities, and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) into your work with youth (ages 3‐18) to safely release stress, regulate the nervous system, express and integrate feelings, and attend to the present moment.
Putting theory into practice, you will also learn how to build resilience “toolkits” and lesson/treatment plans from identified family and cultural strengths, community support, and self‐care practices.
In addition, you'll also gain skills to help you manage your own stress, trauma and post-trauma reactions from personal and professional experiences – benefiting your work, your relationships, and your well-being.
The statistics on stress and trauma are daunting, but there's new hope with mindfulness and somatic tools to complement existing treatment approaches.
Since stress and trauma reside in, and manifest through, the body's physiology, learning to notice, tolerate, and manage somatic experience can substantially promote emotion regulation. Yoga, mindfulness and TRE practices do just that — promoting somatic regulation and interoceptive awareness — and are a widely available, low risk and relatively economical adjunct to current treatment practices.
Participants will explore the current literature, leading trauma theorists, and current cognitive, behavioral, affective and somatic approaches. Building on this foundation, the course will provide opportunities to share your insights, training and experiences to develop practical applications. From this rich background, you will learn theory and practical integrated methods to help youth in various settings, including schools, hospitals, clinics and private practice.
This course is particularly useful for teachers and school counselors, though parents, foster/adoptive parents, clinicians, social service workers or anyone working with youth will benefit.

Offered in conjunction with Portland State University's Continuing Education in the Graduate School of Education (CEED), this course qualifies for 12 CEU/clock hours and/or one PSU graduate /undergraduate credit. Certificate of completion provided.

Lynea Gillen, LPC, RYT, is pioneer in the field of health and wellness education for youth. Her heart-centered, creative and effective tools were developed directly from her 35 years of supporting youth as a school teacher, counselor and clinician. Lynea's Yoga Calm program was developed in a behavior classroom in a rural Oregon elementary school over 16 years ago and is now being used with tens of thousands of children around the world in diverse settings such urban classrooms, clinics and psychiatric hospitals like the Mayo Clinic. Lynea is also an adjunct professor at Portland State University and Lewis & Clark College where she has created 12 courses in counseling and special education and has taught thousands of teachers, counselors and therapists. Her books and media have also won eight national awards. Lynea is a current Licensed Professional Counselor with the state of Oregon, holds an MS in Counseling in Education from PSU and is a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance.
Kathy Flaminio, MSW, RYT, is an adjunct faculty member at St. Mary’s University in Winona, MN, a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance, and a licensed social worker with over 20 years of experience. She is the owner of 1000 Petals, a well‐being training and consulting company, and works at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital providing yoga‐based therapy in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Units. Kathy co‐authored the Teen Resiliency Program with Dr. Henry Emmons and Group, which is an integrative skill‐based model to support teens with anxiety, depression and other stress‐related conditions. She currently provides moving and learning residencies in 63 Minnesota classrooms.
